Annual Conference.

In museums of science and technology we can find very different types of exhibitions from general to specialized ones. Do we really know for whom our museums are designed? Do we take care to attract different target groups?
and " Museums of Technology and Science Centres".
In recent years many science centres around the world, have focused on interactive exhibits and strong educational programmes have been created. What can museum and science centres learn from each other? Which are their strong and weak points? Can a deeper cooperation between the two types of institutions be established and how can we all benefit from it?

Marketing and Public Relations

12 - 17 September 2003
Ljubljana (Slovenia)

MPR - MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS

Annual Conference.
Main Venue: Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre
Theme: "The Impact of Globalisation on Museum Communications"
The past decades have seen both a great increase in the number of museums and a diversification of their activities, in a world of rapid change, where globalisation continually creates new environments and radically changes work patterns. What characterises museums today is the influence they have on our society by conveying information about their collections, contents, knowledge... Also, museums are experiencing great changes as a result of new demands . The latter give rise to new work practices and point to the importance of museum communications and the museum marketing and public relations tasks. Case studies: Central and South European museums and their role as communicators, educators, public services, promoters.
and "The Impact of Globalisation on Museum Communications: A New Development Paradigm of Communication Practices".
Examples of transformation of the relationship between the museum and the user (visitors, sponsors, donators) - how to meet public needs today? Museums from a perspective of increased responsibility, museums as promoters of human values (by arising experience and emotions), how to create partnership and strategic alliances (development of networking between different museums, between museums and private sector, between museums and stakeholders, between museums and friends, etc.). (Monday, 15 September 2003)
All Abstracts of contributions offered must be sent no later than 15 May 2003 to both:

ICEE - EXHIBITION EXCHANGE

ICEE Annual Meeting in partnership with NAME
Theme: "Exhibition Exchanges and Communities"
The International Council on Museums (ICOM) and the American Association of Museums (AAM) international and national committees ICEE & NAME, are teaming up in New York City to offer an international forum for dialogue on Exhibitions, Exchanges and Communities.
In the last few years, many events have heightened our awareness of our inter-connectivity and thrust us into the realm of social responsibility and community relevance. ICEE 2003, as a symposium for advancing the exhibition medium, will explore the role of the exhibitions and their reach into communities. We’ll examine how museums face the challenge of collecting, exhibiting and interpreting contemporary issues. We will discuss how the exhibition can be a catalyst for contemplation over the past and the future and a vehicle for cultural exchange. We will reflect on how the exhibition could be an instrument that captures the collective consciousness and imagination, and exchange ideas on what ways the exhibition acts as sources of knowledge in relation to the historic past.

Management

17 - 21 November 2003
Camberra (Australia)

INTERCOM - MANAGEMENT

Annual meeting
Theme: "The Management of Museum Developments "
Venue: Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia.
In recent years there have been unprecedented building and redevelopment programs in the museum sector. Some have been major 'greenfield' developments; others programs of renewal while the institution continued to operate.
This conference seeks to examine how such projects can be managed effectively while delivering quality outcomes within the restraints of budget and time.
At some time in their careers, most museum professionals will be involved in such a project. They are challenging and demanding and a failure to achieve, and a disappointment by the public in the result, can materially affect the standing of the institution for many years afterwards.
This will be a stimulating two day conference drawing on recent practical experiences in both small and major institutions.
A series of pre and post conference tours will contribute to make this an outstanding event.

Call for papers: A synopsis (no more than 200 words) of proposed papers is sought by 14 August, with advice of acceptance by 29 August. Papers of 15 minutes with 10 minutes for questions are envisaged
