General Assembly and General Conference

The General Assembly is held every three years at the same time as the General Conference, and all ICOM members are invited to take part. As the supreme governing body of ICOM, the General Assembly adopts the triennial programme, elects the Executive Council and gives it directions concerning the operations of ICOM.
The General Conference is held at the same time and place as the General Assembly. It is the meeting point par excellence for all who actively participate in the organisation and is open to all members of ICOM. During the conference, participants receive and consider a report on the activities of ICOM for the preceding triennium, and its draft programme for the following triennium. During the plenary session, museum professionals reflect upon the role of museums, choosing a specific theme as the basis for their discussion. Resolutions arising from the discussions are submitted to the General Assembly.

Advisory Committee

The Advisory Committee is composed of the chairpersons of National Committees, International Committees and Affiliated Organisations. The chairperson is elected for three years and must be a member of ICOM. The vice-chairperson must be a member of the Advisory Committee. The Advisory Committee meets once a year and examines all matters relating to the policy, programme, procedures and finances of ICOM and reports its observations to the Executive Council. ICOM members may participate as observers in the meetings of the Advisory Committee.

Executive Council

Composed of nine members (sixteen as for 2004) elected for a period of three years [the president, two vice-presidents, the treasurer and five ordinary members and the chairperson of the Advisory Committee (who is an ex-officio member)], the Executive Council is the governing body of ICOM and generally meets twice a year. It ensures that the decisions and resolutions of the General Assembly are given effect and that ICOM's programme is carried out. It takes action to implement the proposals and recommendations of the Advisory Committee and, if necessary, co-ordinates the work of National Committees, International Committees and Affiliated Organisations. ICOM members may participate as observers in the meetings of the Executive Council.
