In 2000 and 2001, ICOM-Sweden, together with the Riksutställningar (Swedish Travelling Exhibitions) and the Swedish Museum Association, held six regional seminars and an international conference in Sweden on the future of museums. This conference brought together 240 museum professionals from 38 countries. The first part of the book presents the lectures delivered by the keynote speakers of the regional seminars on three major themes: New times - Separate Worlds; Artefacts, Memory, Narrative; Museums and Morals. The second part of the book contains comments and reflections by the participants on the roles of museums in our contemporary society.

Le groupe PRE-MAL est composé de taxidermistes, d'experts en conservation des textiles, du bois et du papier, d'entomologistes et de spécialistes dans le domaine de la médecine du travail. Sa recherche est interdisciplinaire et couvre trois domaines : la santé des personnes qui travaillent dans les musées, les archives et les bibliothèques, les traitements anti-parasite et leur effet sur la conservation des objets. Ce livre constitue les actes de la 3e réunion organisée par PRE-MAL et le Comité national suédois de l'ICOM en 1998, au musée suédois d'Histoire naturelle de Stockholm. Les deux précédentes réunions avaient eu lieu en 1984 et 1993.
