ICOM Strategic Plan 2001 - 2007

Strategic Plan 2001 - 2007 adopted by the ICOM General Assembly on Friday 6th July 2001 in Barcelona (Spain).

5.2 Objective 2: ICOM advances the sharing of professional knowledge and museum practice internationally through mutual assistance, and actively encourages new models of collaboration.

The anticipated results in accomplishing this objective during the period 2001-2007 are:

  1. ICOM develops and delivers programs in collaboration with its International and National Committees, Regional and Affiliated Organisations, that combine the professional and financial resources of the organisation innovatively. ICOM gives special emphasis to inter-committee and interdisciplinary actions.
  2. ICOM works collaboratively with International Committees on key issues in their specialist areas of professional knowledge and practice.
  3. ICOM facilitates the intra- /inter-regional sharing of expertise throughout its programs. It gives special emphasis to projects that combine resources innovatively through inter-committee, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural frameworks of collaboration.
  4. ICOM provides opportunities for members to contribute to the museum sector world-wide, as well as to receive personal/professional benefits.
  5. The <.museum> Internet Top Level Domain (TLD) initiative has substantially raised ICOM's profile as the international leader in offering specific professional services to the global museum community and raising consciousness of museums globally.
  6. ICOM collaborates on initiatives with appropriate peer bodies for the protection of cultural heritage.

2. Develop and advance the work of MuseDoma, the collaborative initiative with The J. Paul Getty Trust which will manage <.museum> for the benefit of the general public globally.

3. Undertake a review of the status and potential of the ICOM Foundation with a view to ensuring a more responsive and effective vehicle for the organisation; recommend appropriate changes (R49, R50; see Tool Box, S XIII, 9). Executive Council, Secretary-General 2001

4. Ensure that the specific segments of the Advisory Committee meetings (see 1.7) incorporate consultation on options for program exchanges, including identification of specific needs and opportunities for collaboration such as International Museum Day (see Tool Box, S XVI, 3 & 4).

5. Develop new and/or expanded programs based on anticipated needs and with reference to the options identified through the Advisory meetings; affirmatively encourage inter-committee, cross-disciplinary and cross-functional initiatives and potentiality (R44;Tool Box, S XVI, 3,6; XIII, 2, 8).

6. Ensure geographical balance in program initiatives and build opportunities for cooperation with the regional and local organisations into each project (see R47, R44, R36; Tool Box, S XIII, 8; and note esp. 7. Publicise ICOM publications on programs/ projects favouring professional development and improved standards - for example, AFRICOM, ICOM Arab; return of stolen/ looted objects; repatriation initiatives. 8. Request a review of potential financial benefits to ICOM National Committees through application of the category of Supporting Member, by the National Committees' Task Force (see R41; & note potential connections with ICOM Foundation - Tool Box, S XIII, 9).

9. Introduce the category of non-voting Student Member (R13), at the discretion of the National Committees and based on recommended criteria, the details of which are to be investigated by an Ad Hoc Committee; ensure that professionals are targeted for participation in ICOM early in their careers. 10. Develop a common framework/format for an electronic database on ICOM museum resources, for implementation by the National and International Committees, where appropriate, and with ICOM's site serving as a portal. 11. Encourage the development of electronic databases distributed within the National and International Committees, which are tied into ICOM's globally interconnecting framework and which identify individual museums and/or museum personnel interested and available for voluntarily sharing their expertise internationally through ICOM (R18, R19). (Appropriate measures for integrity control would be crucial in such a development, as would be a disclaimer from ICOM (see R12; Tool Box, S XV, 5). ) Secretariat, Advisory Committee, National and International Committees 2004
